BACK TO ALL EVENTS

Writing is often viewed as the culminating activity of literacy instruction, a way for students to demonstrate what they have learned after reading. But research increasingly points to writing as an essential component of literacy development itself. Through purposeful writing, students organize their thinking, strengthen oral and written language, deepen comprehension, and build communication skills.

In this webinar, classroom teacher and author Lindsay Kemeny will introduce the practical, research-based instructional framework behind her forthcoming book, 7 Mighty Writing Moves: Research-Based, Classroom-Tested Strategies to Ensure K-3 Writing Success. Drawing on both research and classroom experience, Lindsay will share seven high-impact instructional moves that help students become stronger, more confident writers through explicit instruction, meaningful practice, and purposeful classroom routines.

Although the examples will be drawn primarily from elementary classrooms, the session will highlight the broader instructional principles behind each “mighty move” and explore how educators can adapt those principles to support literacy development in a variety of instructional settings, including intervention and upper elementary classrooms. Participants will leave with practical ideas they can implement immediately to strengthen writing instruction while supporting the broader development of language, reading comprehension, and communication.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain why writing is an essential component of literacy development and how high quality writing instruction supports language development, reading comprehension, and communication.
  • Identify several research-based instructional practices from Lindsay Kemeny’s Seven Mighty Writing Moves that strengthen writing instruction for all students.
  • Apply broader instructional principles behind the “mighty moves” to strengthen writing instruction in their own classrooms or intervention settings, including supports for striving readers and writers.
