Give Your Intervention Initiative a Seat at the PLC Table

Give Your Intervention Initiative a Seat at the PLC Table
Share on email Share on facebook Share on linkedin Share on x

Early implementation challenges usually don’t go unnoticed because data is unavailable. More often, they go unnoticed because teams haven’t established a regular routine for reviewing that data together. That’s why it can be powerful to leverage a structure that already exists: the Professional Learning Community (PLC).

PLCs are designed to review student data, identify challenges, and solve problems collaboratively. One of the most valuable things leaders can do in September is giving intervention implementation a standing place on the PLC agenda, even if it’s only five minutes.

Create a Consistent Data-Review Routine

Educators may choose to create a standing PLC agenda item that focuses on two guiding questions:

  1. Implementation (Use): Are we using the intervention consistently and as intended?
  2. Student Growth: Are students who are receiving the intervention with fidelity making the progress we expected?

Making intervention data review a part of every PLC agenda helps establish it as a shared tool for collaborative problem-solving rather than a compliance check. It also helps teams identify and address challenges early, instead of waiting for a formal mid-year data review to uncover issues that could have been resolved months earlier.

Let the Data Guide Your Next Steps

When reviewing data, it can be helpful to consider what different use or progress issues may signal:

Use is inconsistent

  • Verify adequate time in the master schedule
  • Clarify usage expectations
  • Strengthen coaching and support structures

Use is strong, but student progress is limited

  • Conduct fidelity checks
  • Examine instructional quality and grouping practices
  • Consider whether the intervention is appropriately matched to student needs (for example, a student may not respond to a comprehension-focused intervention because underlying decoding and fluency gaps remain unaddressed)

To prevent intervention discussions from dominating PLC time, teams may choose to spend just five minutes per meeting reviewing either use or student growth data, depending on what is most relevant. Early in the year, a focus on use data can help ensure the program is being used consistently and as intended. Once usage routines are established, teams can shift attention to student growth data, recognizing that growth data depends on consistent use.

Professional Learning Communities can be a powerful tool for supporting intervention success. Explore practical ways to incorporate implementation and student growth data into regular team discussions, helping educators identify challenges early and make informed instructional decisions.
