Practical Ways to Integrate Emotional Awareness into Literacy Intervention

BACK TO ALL EVENTS

Students who experience difficulty with reading often bring more than academic challenges to literacy intervention. They tend to carry feelings of frustration, apprehension, disappointment, or boredom that can affect their willingness to engage in literacy learning and persist through challenges.

In this interactive session, Dr. Marc Brackett will explore the connection between emotions and learning and share practical strategies that educators and student support teams can use to create emotionally supportive intervention environments that foster both educator and student well-being. Participants will learn how emotional awareness, language, and regulation, coupled with intentional instructional practices, can strengthen engagement and persistence and help students experience greater success in literacy intervention and in school more broadly.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize how emotions influence engagement, motivation, and persistence in literacy learning.
  • Use the Mood Meter to foster emotional awareness and emotional vocabulary in literacy intervention and other settings.
  • Recognize how attending to educators’ emotion mindsets can boost enthusiasm, confidence, and implementation quality when delivering literacy interventions.
  • Apply discussion prompts connected to instructional texts (e.g. SPIRE passages) to deepen student engagement and strengthen connections to reading.
